Copy Music from iPod to iTunes
Imagine that you have a HUGE media library and all of it is kept on your trusty PC or Mac. Now imagine that one day, your computer's hard drive crashes, and that your music library is now gone. All of the music imported off of CD's which you might have lost by now, all of the music downloaded off of free-music web sites, and most importantly, all that money spent on the iTunes Store has just vanished! You then remember that all your music is still on your iPod, safe and intact. You plug it in, you mount it to the OS, and then you realize that iTunes only allows the downloading of music from iTunes to iPod, not iPod to iTunes. (This is to prevent the stealing of music, says Apple). Do you really want to spend hours re-importing music, and repurchasing music from the iTMS? We didn't think so.
Tutorial: Here's a detailed tutorial on how to copy music off your iPod and back onto your computer.

Thank you SO much for the steps on how to get music off of my iPod into the iTunes Library. The steps were so simple and easy!! Now all my music from my iPod is back to the library after the computer had crashed.
Thank you again!!!
Thank you again!!!
OK someone needs to help me. I chose to backup my ipod without a helper application which worked great. all my songs got to itunes, while it was plugged in. then, since it was a "new" itunes, i had to sync my ipod to a new library, deleting all the songs off my ipod and replacing them with what was on my computer. i thought it would be fine because they were on my computer but no. as soon as the songs were off my ipod, itunes couldnt read any of the ones that were in my library. so now i have a blank ipod with 1000 songs on my library that wont play. this is so fucked. someone needs to tell me how to fix it. please!!!!
I have just had to reinstall windows vista on my laptop after hard disk problems and didnt copy my music to a disk. I became increasingly annoyed when I downloaded programs that were asking me to pay and thanks to my friend Gary who showed me this page, I have managed to use the "Without a helper Application" and copy the music straight from my ipod.
I can't express how appreciative I am of your help.
THANK YOU!

Yes, iTunes only allows one-way transfer, that is, from iTunes to iPod. Yet, we can utilize some iPod-to-iTunes transfer program to help us

When I read and tried your little Nerd Note about checking 'search hidden files and folders' when searching one's computer -- you literally made my jaw drop. Why in the world would anyone pay $20-50 for someone else's product when recovering thousands of files turns out to be as simple as clicking a checkmark? That was a complete no-brainer that saved a good chunk of my iTunes library. (Why do everybody else's tutorials make it so complicated?) THANK YOU.
You really should spread the word about that particular option; I'm sure it would save many people a great deal of money if they only knew how ridiculously, retardedly simple it actually is to take music off their iPods. When I think about it, it doesn't seem like Apple protected its music well at all-- if it's really that easy to bypass the no-ripping rule.

Thanks for the help so far.....I have managed to download all of my music and then copied it into iTunes. This appears to have worked ok as iTunes does seem to be populated with all of my music. Sadly though when you try and play any of the tracks now in iTunes it tells me that "This song could not be use as the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
Has anyone any ideas as to what I have done/should do next / Thanks.

I have the same problem as simon - I was sooooo relieved to find your instructions about the hidden files - I now have all my "tracks" sitting there but when I click on them it says "this song could not be udes as the original ...." (as per simon)
