Belkin To Release The TuneFM

Our friends at iPodStudio.com are reporting that iPod accessory company, BELKIN, is about to release a new device known as the TuneFM.

TuneFM is a FM Transmitter that allows you to listen to music on your iPod via any FM stereo receiver.

Belkin explains: "Proximity switches give you total control at the touch of your fingertips, and the LED display indicates FM frequency and memory preset, eliminating the need to use the iPod interface for frequency selection; because the TuneFM is powered by the
iPod no batteries are required."

No price info is available at this point.

Griffin had an excellent idea with a competitor to the TuneFM with a product called the iTrip. but I doubt Griffin did any field testing first, otherwise they would have rethought their approach. With the Apple Software Developer Kit (SDK), they could have written an application for the iPod that let you control the settings for iTrip, instead of making .mp3 files be the trigger for setting the device... this way no one has to make different play lists to accommodate a third party gadget.

I was so happy to buy the itrip, and now it lays in a drawer because it's too frustrating to use. The range is also less than impressive. I know that the FCC has rules on how strong a radio transmitter can be for this type of device, but I should be able to use the iPod when it's in the passenger seat - but apparently that's too far from my stereo! I had to lay it in my ashtray to get a good signal.

Itrip: Great concept, beautiful design, crappy execution.

Hopefully the TuneFM will be better.
