Battlestar Galactica Killed Broadcast TV
According to Mindjack.com, Broadcast TV died on October 18th, 2004. So what's so special about that date? That evening, the Sci-Fi Channel's remake of Battlestar Galactica premiered on the SkyOne channel in the UK. It wasn't slated to air in the US until January 2005. NBC Universal, the company that produces the show, wanted to wait until January in the US because that's normally a slow time of year for American television.
However, it only took a few hours for the UK premiere of Battlestar Galactica to become a global premiere thanks to peer-to-peer networks like BitTorrent. In general, Sci-Fi fans are pretty geeky. Recording and distributing Battlestar Galactica became a global past time for many Sci-Fi fans. Torrent tracking websites like TorrentSpy have an entire Battlestar Galactica listing with 94 different files.

LOL there are SIX THOUSAND seeders and TWENTY THREE THOUSAND peers for the season finale on bittorrent.
Has anybody ever seen a BT file with more downloaders/uploaders than that?

Yes BSG is the best show on TV.. I'm in Canada and we can't get the Scifi channel. So i download it from BitTorrent. Atten netwok execs: put it on TV everywhere at the same time or we will just download the show whenever we want.
SciFi was contractually obliged to not air the series when it first started until the season had already been aired by Sky One. Sky One would not foot the majority of the production costs of the first season otherwise. Blame Sky for it not airing sooner in the US & abroad, not SciFi.
The fundamental reason is that content is often licensed by region. In canada its even worse. Season 1 finished on sky, was half way over in the USA and wasnt even starting yet in Canada. People are grabbing it on torrent simply because its not available anywhere else. if I could get it off itunes in canada I would (its on itunes usa which i can't purchase from ARRRRGHHH!).
I know if I wait i can get it on DVD but that's so 5 minutes ago in the age of the internet. the content providers need to realize that they need to realize that they are going ot have to start doing simultaneous world wide releases to make money because of the reach of the internet. the providers are going to need to realize that people will pay and only for the immediacy of access, not for the "value" of the show.
