Copy Videos off YouTube

UPDATE: YouTube has reworked their site in response to this article. They absolutely hate us. If you get an error when trying to download a YouTube video, please try some of the plug-ins and scripts listed in step #3.

YouTube.com is a great resource. Not many sites allows users to freely upload, view, and share video clips like YouTube does. YouTube even lets users easily post videos on their blogs and personal web sites. But because anyone can upload a video clip on YouTube, copyright violations are rampant.

In an effort to prevent the widespread distribution of illegal copied video files, YouTube encodes its video files in the Adobe Flash format, which prevents viewers from downloading files and making digital copies.

Here's a step-by-step MethodShop.com tutorial on how to rip video files off YouTube.com and convert them for an iPod Video. This trick will work on Mac or PC using Firefox or Internet Explorer.

This hack works with either Firefox or Internet Explorer on Mac or PC? wow. nice way to cover all the bases boys.

About grabbing images/swfs/videos from almost any site using Safari.

In Safari open the web page containing the video.
Open the Activity panel. There will be a drop down triange with the page title.

Look for the obvious name of the video (something dot flv) or mp3 or mov or whatever.

Click the name.
Copy the entire url... you know, command c.

Open the Downloads panel. Paste, as in command v.

It will download.

ha your website should be banned! Here's how to circumvent the law, rules and software on a 3rd party website! Go to jail methodshop!!!

^ Yeah. Because so many people will lose their valuable income when we put "Lookwell" on our iPods.

I had to laugh out loud when I saw that you used "Lookwell" as the vid in the tutorial to download off of YouTube since it was like the third video I'd watched there. I'd looked for "TV Funhouse" vids, then searched on "smiegel", when I saw there was a vid written by him and Conan O'Brian, I knew it was going to be great. Pity it didn't go further than the pilot.

I got the videodownloader to work last night but this morning I'm getting the following message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: youtube_get() in /home/.decca/javimoya/videodownloader.net/vd/test.php on line 56

The Youtube FLV Grabba seems to be working.

yeah youtube hates your site. they are recoding their site bec of your article.

use the plugins listed in step 3

lol.. ok... thanks a lot!

I love this. I got it to work once but now it won't work again, I'll have to try again =)

"My issue, is that I don't own an ipod. I just want to view the YouTube videos on my Desktop. I tried adding all of the common extensions to the end of the raw file (.mpg, .wmv, .avi, ....), but obviously this didn't work." ~Andrea

once you download the flash video file from youtube, rename the file to end with a .flv file extension. then convert it with a program like MoviePod (Mac & PC). MoviePod will convert the flash video file to an mpeg-4 video file. you can watch an MP4 file on any computer with QuickTime installed.

Hey, I was able to locate the file, but I couldn't copy it, drag it, or do anything to it! Once I closed Firefox, the file immediately disappeared.

Taking the clip from Safari and then dragging it into MoviePod totally worked. For anyone else doing that, drag the file from the finder window. Moviepod won't open it on its own.

Thank you so much for the advice!

Thank you so much for this article. It saved me so much time and hassle.

i have one question. When i download a vid off youtube and convert it, it turns very dark. anyway around this?

I constantly rip vids from you tube.I had been converting the
oldway. Then,I found a great place for conversion. It's called media-convert.com,and it requires NO installation, and it converts nearly ANYTHING in a short period of time, including from FLV to MP4, AVI,etc. I thought it might be more helpful than having to download a converter. Thanks for your tips methodshop!!

I now have a movie of a Sesame Street sketch that has been stuck in my head for about thirty years.

i looked at your thing on how to add videos from youtube to your ipod and it worked for 4 videos, but now whenever i change the "psw whatever" to "get_video" it starts to download but not as a movie. the final result is some weird thing that i cant open, the icon is just a piece of paper, and its titled "get_video" instead of the video's url thing that it did before. i assure you i didnt change what i did at all and i wanted to download a couple more videos!!! help!!!!!

i get the same thing. i hate it. noone in this world can rip youtube amvs anymore?

used ur youtube video download walkthrogh and did it the hard way. brilliant. thanks

K thanks lots it worked now! I used the Hard Way and
safari up to media convert on firefox because media
convert wasn't working well on Safari. Anyways, i'm
going to go tell other people! THANKS

Just wanted to say THANK YOU!!!!
I have been looking in vain for so many american videos on itunes but being from the UK i only have a limited rescource, unless i turn my account to a US one i wouldn't be able to get the vids i wanted for my ipod!! This info has saved me time energy and MONEY, it took minutes to install and hardly any time at all to suss out, i had the vids i wanted/converted and on my ipod painlessly. Worth the £15 i spent on Reply Convertor too!
