Dell Recalls Exploding Laptop Batteries
At a June 2006 conference in Japan, a Dell laptop suddenly exploded into flames. Luckily for its owner, the explosion occurred while the PC was sitting on a table and not in his lap. Gaston, a reader of the Inquirer, witnessed the malfunction and reported that the notebook continued to burn, producing several more explosions over the course of about five minutes.
Unfortunately it's probably only a matter of time before something like this happens on an airplane.

I cant defend anyone at this point, but so far, why are the incidents isolated to mainly Dells? Lenovo/ IBM, Apple, Gateway, HP... no one else yet has had any problems of this sort. I am apt to think that perhaps Dell has a bigger part to play in this due to how the batteries are used/ recharged within the laptop itself.
What's most humorous to me about this is that I noticed the battery in my Dell (mine is one of the ones being recalled)was really getting uncomfortably hot before this news was released. I can't tell you how many times I've commented "For this to be a laptop, not insulating against all of this heat is a huge design omission"...seriously, I would have to get a blanket to use my laptop sometimes.
Wonder how many times I came close to bursting out in flames?
