I don't know about dropping an ipod in the fish tank, sounds kinda wasteful. If I had one I'd prefer to use it as a paperweight(lol). But seriously, my brother has an ipod and I have a Sony cassette walkman. Using good quality headphones, (came with neither ipod nor walkman)I listened to a couple Beatles songs recorded from vinyl lp to cassette on my walkman and compared it to the same music on my brother's ipod. Results: The cassette walkman sounded noticably better! Sure, there were a few clicks and pops, but the overall sound was much fuller and warmer. I'll stick with my tapes!
