Zune Screen Cracks
According to Engadget, Microsoft's customer support center has received a flood of angry phone calls from Zune owners. For some reason if you let your Zune change for an extended period of time the screen will crack. A recent post on Mac Daily News conjectures that the issue is with the lithium ion battery located directly behind the Zune's screen. When the battery gets too hot it expands and cracks the screen.

You'd think that Microsoft would consider this issue a major design flaw and offer to replace the cracked screens. So far there hasn't been an official statement from Microsoft yet and unfortunately cracked screens are not currently covered under the Zune's warranty. So where does that leave Zune owners with busted screens? They can either wait for Microsoft to address this issue or pull out their wallet and have a 3rd party like iPodMods repair their cracked Zune screen.
With all the screen scratching and battery life complaints about the iPod, it's nice to see the Zune having a little trouble too.

"I am sorry sir/madam that your Zune has a crack in it. This is a big problem stemming from a larger issue; the root of that probem being YOU CHOSE TO BUY A ZUNE!!!!!!!!!!."
This sounds like a possible death scene in those poorly and overdone Final Destination movies. Instead of a monitor exploding and sending shards of glass into the character's jugular, why not use a Zune. The unsuspecting teen plugs his Zune in, places it on his nightstand, and goes to bed. Queue the tension building scene where a charge status bar continues to grow until it hits 100%, then the screen shatters sending thousands of fragments into the air. One fragment ricochets off the wall, slices through a cat decapitating it, flies out the window, ricochets off a passing car causing a multi-car pile up, ricochets off an airplane causing it to go down, then flies back through the teen's window and pierces through the teen's jugular. I'm pretty sure Microsoft would be happy to have the product placement.
My son's zune screen cracked on May 22, 2007. We took it back to Circuit City. The store manager accused us of breaking the screen. They refuse to take it back. Microsoft customer support refuses to do anything also. They just directed us to call Zune Support. The customer support person I spoke with at Zune on May 24, J.D., told me that they sell millions of these and if only a couple hundred break, they are doing well because they don't cover cracked screens. A cracked screen will void your one year warranty with them. No one is even interested in taking this thing to evaluate the problem (because they already know they have a problem and what it is). Please tell everyone you know not to buy this product unless Microsoft, Zune and local retailers will accept responsibility for the products they make/sell and service this defective product.
yea im pretty pissed also, i wasn't even charging the darn thing and I noticed the screen was cracked, I have had so many issues from the pink one just up and randomly not working, to them giving me such a hard time about the stupid box it came in and now this. The only thing is I liked the Zune and hate having electronics just laying around half working, I'm trying to find someone to fix it for cheap but now they only cost about $100
this sucks my zune screen cracked
and the warenty dose not cover it
the stupid people who made it put a thin little sheet of plastic over the real screen
but the new one have scrach proof glass
hmmmm....but they say nothing is wrong with the first one

Well, that sucks about the screen cracking for all of you guys, but...are you sure it's the battery?
I've had my original zune for a year and a half- never once had a problem with it. I charge it overnight about every other day, sometimes I leave it on the charger for more than 24 hours. Sometimes I'll leave it in my car, and wont be able to touch it when I get back because it's so hot- and all this time, my screen has never once cracked.
Just wondering if "MAC daily news" is the best [unbiased] source for information regarding Microsoft's design defects >.>
"Regardless of whether it's a real issue or not, it's not like anybody needed yet another reason to not waste their money on a Zune."
I'd buy a zune over an ipod again in a second, even if it was my screen that cracked.
And also, according to this article, it's just their speculation that the battery caused it to crack.
Furthermore, if you follow the links in this article to the engaget article, you'll read the 3 full pages of comments by people like me who have had no problem with it.
Be careful you don't blow this out of proportion here..

We are in the same boat. We have purchased 2 zunes and both had screens that cracked. Microsoft referred me to Zune and zune was only able to point me to an auto repair center to fix the lcd on the zune. Microsoft would be wise to have someone look into the problems with their product and fix them before offering a defunct product to the public that they are not willing to fix or offer assistance to replace the product! Zune could also use a better customer service department to handle customer complaints and concerns.
Then there is the problem with the batteries just going flat dead on these "2nd" generation ones as well. Currently waiting for a coffin to send it in and wait for, appears based on feedback from various place, about 6 weeks or so.
Not sure but somewhere the batteries seem to be a major problem. Cracked screens being one of many side effects.
The comment above about "a few hundred of them" being defective? Not likely. Is measuring into the tens of thousands based on discussions with several retailers of the devices. Still trying to find a source for actual numbers from Toshiba (the actual maker) or MS on actualized returns at this point.
Overall its a better device than some iPods, but this is beyond reasonable failure for the pricepoint these devices garner.
