When my sister-in-law quit her Verizon plan, they wanted $275, and her phone was useless elsewhere, too. But Capitol Hill didn't pay attention to Verizon's "Hotel California Service". Or maybe they did, but the writer of the article didn't. Hmm...
I won't be buying one, no matter how much I would like to own one. What's interesting is this all boils down to DRM of the social engineering sort. Lock your
customers into one format, ensure they have to buy your (or your partners') products. It is the one real thing that Jobs has brought out of his watching Microsoft. He may cover it by appearing like he plays nice with the FLOSS communities, but he really could care less. He's running a business, after all.
