How to Reset a Frozen iPod or iPhone
Tutorial: How to reset a locked up iPod or iPhone
Created: 02/12/2002 | Updated: 08/22/2010 | By: @methodshop

Hardly anything can be as annoying or potentially frightening as a frozen iPod or iPhone that stops responding. Don't worry. Your locked up iPod or iPhone can be easily reset. Here's how you do it.

Restarting an iPod or iPhone is a simple procedure that will not erase any of your music, data files, or customized preferences.

" Dear @methodshop, Dumb question. If the iPod is not responding and appears to be frozen, what do I do? " ~ Lloyd

Double Check the Hold/Silent Switch

1. Check that your hold or silent switch is off. The switch is located in the top corner of the iPod, iPad and iPhone. If you see orange, then the device is locked. To unlock the device, slide the switch in the opposite position.

If you have an iPod Mini or 4th gen iPod or higher, then you need to press the Menu and Select buttons. The Select button is the center button in the middle of the wheel.

For older iPods (1G - 3G) you'll need to press the Menu and Play buttons to restart.

NERD NOTE: If you still can't get your iPod to restart, try placing it on a table or flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.

The Restart Screen

3. The Apple logo will briefly appear upon a successful restart before advancing to the main home screen. You can now let go of the buttons on your iPod, iPhone or iPad.

If your battery is very low, you may have to attach your device to a power source before it will restart.
