WD Passport USB Hard Drive
"Is that 500 GBs in your pocket? Yes? Oh. Hi."
Created: 11/04/2008 Updated: 08/10/2009 Authors: Staff

wd passportThe WD Passport is an elegant portable hard drive that's simple to use, light and easy to carry, has tons of storage and is powered directly through a USB cable. No bulky power adapter or AC wall outlet required.

No more excuses. Move your files from computer to computer or back your crap up (finally).

Requirements:

    • lots of files that need backing up or transport to another computer
    • USB 2.0 port

NERD NOTE: Western Digital was founded on April 23, 1970 as General Digital, initially (and briefly) a manufacturer of MOS semiconductor test equipment. It rapidly became a specialty semiconductor maker, with startup capital provided by several individual investors and industrial giant Emerson Electric Company.

Portabilty

The WD Passport drives are very small and very easy to transport. They easily fit inside the average-sized work bag or backpack and are only slightly larger than the average cellphone.

wd passport

But because these drives are so portable, they are more likely to get knocked around. Case Logic makes a great protective case that perfectly fits the WD Passport drives. The case has a soft but thick and durable shell. Inside the case is a mesh pocket and securing strap to keep your WD Passport hard drive and USB cables stowed.

Synchronization

Once you start transporting massive amounts of files between multiple computers, synchronization will become an issue. WD's synchronization and encryption software lets you take your critical data with you. Plug your WD Passport into any PC, edit files, read e-mail, and view photos. Then sync all of your changes back to your home or office computer. Your data is protected with 128-bit encryption (Windows only).

Perfect for the business traveler who needs to transfer large amounts of data from laptop to clients or just daily backups in case of accidents from mishandled luggage to coffee spills.

NERD NOTE: Through the early years of the 1970s, Western Digital made their money by selling calculator chips; by 1975, they were the largest independent calculator chip maker in the world.

Small Size. Big Storage.

Despite their tiny physical size, the WD Passport drives come in 250 GB, 320 GB and 500 GB. Perfect for transporting large media files like movies and TV shows you'vre ripped for your iPod from DVD. And if you spend a lot of time downloading files from BitTorrent, then you will fall in love with the WD Passport drives.

Backup Lots of Files

Don't trust your coworkers? Working on sensitive files at work? Think you're about to get fired and want to clear off your hard drive at work before they lock you out? The WD Passport is perfect for grabbing large amounts of files quickly and all at once. USB hard drives usually aren't bigger than a few GBs. CD-ROMs max out at 700 MBs and a DVD-ROM at 4.5 GBs. Chances are, a 250 GB WD Passport is big enough to copy not just your personal files, but your entire hard drive... applications and all.

wd passportFinal Thoughts

Pack up your office files and take them home. Carry thousands of songs or pictures. Synchronize files between home and office and encrypt everything on the drive for added security. The WD Passport drives are cheap, fast, have tons of storage and will save you hours of agergation when trying to transport files.

OtterBox for iPod Mini
showerOn the run, in the car, or at the gym, our iPods have gone with us to the ends of the earth... except places near water. But thanks to the OtterBox Mini you can now safely take your iPod Mini near or even underwater.

arrowThe Torch
reviewWicked Lasers named their new flashlight the TORCH... and for good reason. The "TORCH" is technically a flashlight. It looks like a flashlight. Operates like a flashlight. But this is no ordinary flashlight. The TORCH is so bright that its beam can ignite flammable objects as fast as fire.

JL421 Badonkadonk Land Cruiser
You The JL421 Badonkadonk Land Cruiser (ba-donk-a-donk) is a custom made tank that looks like it was modeled after Jabba the Hut's Sail Barge from Return of the Jedi. Nicknamed the "Donk," the JL421 Land Cruiser made its debut in 2002 at the Burning Man festival in Nevada.

Nintendo Wii Nunchuck Controller
Is a weak arm or physical stamina keeping you from taking your Nintendo Wii gaming experience to the next level? Perhaps you should look into getting the Nintendo Wii Nunchuck Controller. This accessory adds even more innovation to the next generation of gaming and does it all with less physical movement.

JBL Creature II Speaker System
What's the point of downloading your favorite songs on iTunes if they sound like crap on your computer's built-in speakers? The sound quality and volume these little babies emit, much to the chagrin of my neighbors, is truly phenomenal.

Apple TV Review
You may have heard of that new Apple product, I believe it's called the, uhh, Apple TV. I understand that newspapers, other blogs, and your Aunt have already reviewed this thing, but I thought I'd add my two cents.

Mod Your iPod
Are you a victim of the iPod's blossoming popularity? Feel like just another pair of white headphones in the crowd? Maybe it's time you got an iPod Mod.

H20 iPod Mini Case
H20 Audio has created a waterproof and impact resistant case so that we can take our iPod Minis anywhere we want… including the ocean free.

Digital Picture Frames
Why give someone a single still framed picture when you can give them an entire slide show? Most Digital Picture Frames can playback a series of digital photos and videos on high-resolution screens.

JBL Encounter Speakers
In a world of boring shelf speakers that are as fascinating as the wires that connect them, the JBL Encounter draws people towards it with its innovative tongue-in-cheek design and then lavishes them with deep warm sound.
