Assign Drive Letter i to Your iPod

Microsoft Windows assigns drive letters to disk volumes to help tell them apart. For example, the default letter assigned to your computer’s hard drive is probably ‘c.’ Each time you dock the iPod to a PC, Windows will assign the iPod the next available drive letter, such as ‘f’ or ‘g.’ But isn’t the letter ‘i’ the most appropriate drive letter assignment for the iPod?

Here’s a simple tutorial on how to assign the drive letter ‘i’ to an iPod connected to a PC using Microsoft Windows.

Apple FAIL: Stupid iPod Nano Camera Placement!

The new iPod Nano unveiled by Steve Jobs last week has a serious design flaw: Stupid Camera Placement!

The camera is actually on the back BEHIND the click wheel -- exactly where your hand is! There is virtually NO way to hold the new little iPod Nano and NOT have your damn finger in the way of the lens. No joke. What was Apple the thinking?

I went into the Apple Store yesterday and wanted to buy a new Nano. The video camera was so poorly placed that I refused to buy it. I looked at five different Nanos and all of them had test shots by customers. Virtually all photos had fingers in the picture.

Think I'm kidding? Go try it. I asked an insufferable hipster Apple employee about this flaw and he nervously confessed they've heard nothing but complaints since the new iPod Nanos arrived. (This pimply-faced, unshowered hipster by the way, was wearing a wool ski cap inside on a sunny, 80 degree New York day.)

Insane! Apple is usually excellent at this sort of common sense... Who puts a f-ing camera right where your hand holds the device?

99.9% of all shots have the user's finger in the way!

Tekkeon NavDock for iPod - Review

Tekkeon's NavDock is a home media center all wrapped up into an iPod dock. The NavDock lets you navigate your iPod through an on-screen menu to play videos, photos, and music on a connected standard definition television.

NavDock browses directly through your iPod menus, so finding and playing music and videos is easy. And you can use the 16-button remote to adjust or mute volume, shuffle, repeat or skip songs, and fast forward or rewind through music or videos. The remote offers a 5-way navigation pad and quick keys that you jump directly to the videos, photos, music, or settings menus.

And the damn thing isn't even that expensive. But it's also not perfect. If you want to connect your iPod to your TV, should you splurge and get an Apple TV, buy a cheap $5 AV iPod cable or get the NavDock? Let's find out.

iPod or iPhone Reset

Is your iPod or iPhone frozen? This can happen for a number of reasons and does not necessarily indicate a serious problem. Sometimes they just need a reset much like the way your computer needs a restart once in a while.

Restarting an iPod or iPhone is a simple procedure that will not erase any of your music, data files, or customized preferences.

Sometimes the iPhone just gets confused. For example, the iPhone may be powered on but it won't respond to any button, switch, or touchscreen input. Try pressing and holding the Home button on the front of the iPhone for 6 seconds until the active program closes.

If this technique does not resolve the issue or the iPhone is in a different state such as showing a persistent Apple logo on the display, then you should reset the iPhone.

Help! My iPod Fell in the Toilet!

Over the years, we've gotten a bowl-load of these "Help! I dropped my iPod in the toilet!" emails. It's an epidemic.

Here's a sample: "Yes, it really happened, and I'd rather not go into it right now. It was submerged in water for 3-4 seconds, and now the screen is on and not responding. It's making a little sound like it's still running.

I tried opening it but couldn't get the case open except for a corner. SOMEONE HELP! 15GB new iPod. What a shame."

This is such a common problem that we've created a rather gross iPod toilet graphic (see above) and made a special "iPod Toilet Trap" tech support page. If you've dropped your iPod in the toilet, this page might prove useful.

Free iPod Support: The iPod Toilet Trap

For those of you who haven't dropped your iPod in the toilet yet, try not to take your iPod in the bathroom. If you really need to hear music, try singing the next time you are in the shower.

World's First 240GB iPod

Apparently the R&D department at Rapid Repair has been busy. When they aren't repairing broken iPods from methodshop.com users (Rapid Repair is our repair partner), they are cramming insane amounts of storage into iPods. Their latest success is the creation of a 240GB iPod.

"The mod is actually very simple to do on a 5th gen iPod. And with a 240GB iPod you can finally carry your entire $57,667.50 iTunes library" Rapid Repair CEO Ben Levy said in an email to us today.

Ready to do the upgrade? What model iPod do you have? Unfortunately the Toshiba's MK2431GAH 240GB drive is only compatible with the iPod Video 5G and original iPod Video (30GB, 60GB and 80GB ONLY). Rapid Repair hopes to add the iPod Classic and Zune 2G to the compatible list very soon.

How much does all this cost? About $1 a GB. You can find out more on this page on the Rapid Repair website.

Move over iFart, iSteam is now the hottest thing in the iTunes App Store.

iSteam turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into a foggy glass surface and allows you to wipe it clean with your fingertips. Exactly like a mirror after a hot shower.

Since being released on December 30, iSteam has sold over 1 million copies and overtaken iBeer, iFart, Ocarina, Whoopie Cushion and Pull My Finger to become #1 "entertainment" application in the App Store.

Apple Unveils iPod and iTunes Upgrades

Apple CEO, Steve Jobs was thin, but the new iPods were thinner at Apple's "Let's Rock" press conference yesterday. In addition to new versions of the iPod Nano and iPod Touch, Jobs also announced iTunes 8.0 and a "Genius" feature.

Apple is revamping its iPod line up. The thicker iPod classic is history. It will be replaced with a slimmer 120 GB model for $249. The new iPod Nano promises to be the thinnest iPod yet and ships with the "Genius" ability to create intuitive playlists without having to connect to iTunes. A new version of the iPod Touch, which will be out in time for the holidays, is also thinner and comes with integrated speakers for listening to music and online radio on the go. Both new models will also ship with new headphones that include a remote control and a microphone.

iTunes 8.0 gets a new "Genius" feature that automatically generating playlists of songs that "go great together." The Genius Sidebar can be set to upload your library contents to the iTunes Store so that it's better equipped to recommend songs you might like. If you've ever used the streaming music service Pandora, then you probably have a good idea of what the Genius Sidebar is capible of.

It looks like Kevin Rose's blog post that predicted Apple would release new iPods and an iTunes update this month was correct. The raw image mockup was even right.

Solar Powered Bonsai Tree Can Charge Your iPod and Mobile Phone

Recharge your cellphone, iPod, iPhone and camera with this USB solar powered bonsai tree by French designer Vivien Muller.

Thanks to 54 tiny photovoltaic panels, the iBonsai (we just made that name up) will store energy in a hidden battery during the day, allowing you to recharge your gadgets even at night.

Hate wire clutter? Who doesn't. The bonsai charging tree cleverly hides all wires and plugs under the tray.

Need to slim down the tree's girth so you can fit it on your desk? No problem. You can rotate each part individually and produce an endless number of different shapes. It's like metal adult LEGOS.

The iBonsai Tree is decorative, good for the environment and sexy. It's also just still a concept, so sorry. You can't buy this yet. Hopefully Vivien will sell his concept and get the tree mass produced soon.

Kevin Rose says New iPods Coming Soon

Is Digg.com founder and Diggnation star Kevin Rose abusing his Apple contacts? This past weekend Rose blogged about some new stuff being released by Apple next month including new iPods and an iTunes update.

According to Kevin, Apple will announce the following within the next few weeks:

  • the iPod nano will take on a slimmer, more rounded look
  • the iPod Touch will get an update with a new 2.1 operating system
  • Prices of the iPod line will drop to differentiate the product from the iPhone
  • iTunes 8.0 will be a major new release with several additional features
  • Further out Apple is planning to add Blu-ray support to Mac OS X

Why would Rose risk exposing his Apple contacts by announcing this information? And why now? Rose mentions his Twitter account multiple times in his blog post and urges people to "follow" him on Twitter to get more information. Perhaps Rose is bitter that Barack Obama took the top slot away from him on Twitter earlier this month.

60 million iPhone Apps Downloaded... Already

When Apple launched their new App Store on July 10th, everyone knew it would be a success. But no one could have known it would be this BIG of a success.

The App Store has delivered more than 60 million apps to iPhone/iPod Touch owners in less than a month. According to an interview in the Wall Street Journal, Apple CEO Steve Jobs says that the App Store is bringing in an average of $1 million a day for the fee-based apps which range from $1-$10. That's right. Apple is on track to make $360 million per year from their brand new App Store division even though Apple gives 70% of all App Store revenue to developers.

"I've never seen anything like this in my career for software," ~ Steve Jobs

Sega's Super Monkey Ball ($9.99) game remains the top app, selling 300,000 copies during the store's first 20 days. We'll do the math for you on that one: 300,000 * 9.99 = $2,997,000. Not bad for a game Sega only spent 8 weeks working on.

Power Surges and iPods

We just a ton of emails everyday from people with iPod related questions. Most questions can be easily answered by forwarding a link from our Free iPod Support section but every once in awhile we'll get an email good enough to share... like this one.

The following email is from Anthony who owns several beautiful cottages near Newcastle, Britain in the UK.

"I do not possess an iPod but I have a question about them. I own a holiday cottage business and recently we have had a complaint from a customer. While staying in one of our cottages both her kids 2 year old iPods broke. The lights in the cottage had been flickering and there had been a couple of occasions when the electricity had been tripped. Could this affect iPods seriously enough to damage them?"

One of Anthony's guest cottages

Yes. A power surge could have damaged the iPods... but only if they were plugged in to an electrical outlet at the time of the surge. Power surges and electrical storms can't damage an iPod unless they have a physical connection with the device. As long as the iPods weren't plugged into an electrical outlet or struck by lightning, they can't be damaged by a massive burst of power.

Here's an extreme example of iPod damage by a burst of electrical power. In the summer of 2006, an American teenager named Jason Bunch was mowing his lawn while listening to his iPod when a storm front moved in and lightning struck his iPod. Unfortunately Jason's ears were severely burned and he lost some of his hearing. His iPod was also obviously destroyed.

So unless both of the iPods in question were charging and physically connected to a power outlet in one of your cottages, you are not responsible for any damage. Going forward, make sure you place surge protectors in all of your cottages. The last thing you want is for one of your guests to ruin their $6,000 super laptop while staying at your cottage.

Here are some good surge protectors:

Why did both of the cottage guests' iPods die at the same time? Perhaps the iPods were knocked around en route to the cottage or dropped during unpacking. Without a physical inspection it's hard to tell. You can get broken iPods and iPhones repaired here.

iPhone 3G Launch Plagued by Long Lines and Network Problems

The long awaited iPhone 3G was released on Friday, July 11th. But what should have been a happy and joyous day for iPhone fans, ended up being an exercise in frustration for many.

After waiting in line outside of Apple Stores for hours (or even days), some consumers then spent up to 7 hours inside because of "network problems" that slowed or even halted the activation of new iPhones.

The iPhone 3G line outside the Manhattan Apple Store on 14th Street at 12:52PM.
Estimated wait time was ~4 hours.

Apparently Apple's authentication servers weren't prepared to handle the amount of global network traffic from new iPhone 3G activations. Network slowdowns were first reported after stores opened in Europe. The network then came to a halt after US East Coast stores opened. By the time American West Coast stores had started selling iPhones, Apple's servers just couldn't take it anymore and started crashing. It was AT&T's insistence that all phones get activated in the store that caused the problem. During last year's iPhone 1.0 launch Apple had everyone activate their own phone at home through iTunes.

Fanboys try beat the heat with umbrellas while waiting in line for an iPhone 3G.

Some customers were even sent home with a new iPhone and instructions on how to finish activating the phone at home or even worse... a rain check. This definitely made quite a few people mad.

"I skipped work and waited in line from 12 noon to 2AM to get my boyfriend a new iPhone only to walk away with rain check slip," Paul Hahn told MethodShop.com. "The [authentication] servers were down most of the day and [an Apple store employee] told me I should to come back [Sunday] morning. This sucks. I'm so angry and so hungry right now." Paul also said that employees at the Apple Store were were giving away Apple umbrellas and waters to try to keep the crowd happy.

The new iPhone 3G.

Unfortunately, Apple's network problems also caused headaches for original iPhone and iPod Touch owners who tried to upgrade to the new 2.0 software. "After one of my officemates came back from his lunch hour with a new iPhone, I tried upgrading the software on my old iPod Touch," said Collin Pisarra, a graphic designer in Manhattan. "I really wanted to check out the new App Store but I guess Apple's network problems messed up [my iPod Touch]. It got bricked. I hope I can restore it when Apple's servers are back online. Right now I'm getting an error message that says: [We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (type -9838).]"

Networking problems left many users with both iPhones and iPod Touches that couldn't complete the 2.0 update process.

Apple wasn't responding to requests for comments, but a spokesman for AT&T, the exclusive iPhone carrier in the United States, said the problems were caused by iTunes servers and referred further questions to Apple.

Network problems caused many iPhone and iPod Touch users to see this iTunes error screen when attempting to update their device to the new 2.0 software.

Earlier this week, Apple also had problems with the relaunch of their data service now called MobileMe (it was previously called iTools and .Mac). The MobileMe service is designed to synchronize a user's personal data across devices, including the iPhone, but many users were denied access to their accounts this week, including Frank Accarrino.

"I've been trying to upload pictures from iPhoto to my .Mac website for the past few days but it's offline. I can't even get to my Mac mail. I bet Steve Jobs is pissed right now," Frank said.

Apple is usually known for flawless product launch events. Let's hope Apple solves these network issues for next time. It's estimated that 1 million iPhone 3G models were sold in the U.S. this weekend.

iTunes App Store

Apple launched the iTunes App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch this afternoon. There are currently 500+ applications available for download. The cost for these applications range from free to over $30.

All the big players have apps in the store including MySpace, Facebook, AOL, and eBay. There's also a mix of games like Texas Hold'em and Super Monkey Ball, lots of utilities and even ebooks.

You can download applications now, but you can't do anything with them until the iPhone/iPod 2.0 firmware is released which will probably happen on Friday July 11th - the official release date of the new iPhone 3G.

My iPod Broke While I Was on Vacation

It always breaks my heart when we get a "my iPod broke while I was on vacation" email like the one below. When you are on vacation you probably don't have a computer to help fix the iPod. And worse yet, a broken iPod means no music or movies to enjoy on the plane ride home.

"hey there, methodshop!

okay, so I'm flying into La Paz, and my iPod starts acting funny. I'd heard they don't do well at high elevations, so I go to put it to sleep and I get the - gasp - sad iPod icon, along with a url for apple. this does not look good.

I arrive in Cochabamba, 3 thousand feet closer to sea level, and look at my iPod. the menu is there, all well and good, but when I go to play a song I find that the Thing-is-empty.

no songs on it. nothing. nada. zilch.

what the heck happened?!?!?! and how can I restore some tuneage before my 13-hour journey home on Sunday?

help me, methodshop. you're my only hope... Tracy"

Hi Tracy. Nice Facebook profile picture by the way. You are in a sticky situation right now. I won't try to sugar coat it - that would probably just make it more sticky. Anyway, there are a few things you can do to try to fix your iPod.

  1. The sad iPod icon is not something you want to ever see. The first thing you should do is reset your iPod. Cross your fingers and restart the thing. If you are lucky, it will be good as new. It will just start working again and all your music will be there like nothing ever happened. The directions on how to restart your iPod vary from model to model so check out this link for more info: How to Restart a Frozen iPod.

  2. If the restart trick didn't work, you should try putting your iPod into Dianogtisc Mode. This will run a series of hardware tests on your iPod. If the hard drive test fails, then you are probably screwed. But keep reading, there are more tips below.

  3. Next you should try connecting the iPod to a computer and running a hard drive check. Mac's have a program called Disk Utility (Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities). If you are on a PC, then open My Computer from the desktop and right-click on the iPod. Then select Properties > Tools tab > Defragment Now). But Windows computers won't recognize Mac formatted iPods. So you'll have to try to find a Mac.

  4. If the iPod is being stubborn and won't connect to the computer, then try forcing the iPod into Disk Mode. Running a hard drive check might be hard to do, especially while on vacation when you typically don't have a computer handy. If you are lucky, there might be a pale nerdy kid with a laptop in the shade by the pool. Go flirt with him. Show him your nerdy Facebook profile picture. He might be able to fix it for you.

  5. Here's you last resort. You're going to have to erase the iPod. Sometimes the hard drive on the iPod just gets too fragmented and messy after adding and deleting thousands of songs over months or years of use. The best way to clean up all those scatted blocks of data is to start fresh. The problem is, you probably didn't bring your computer on vacation with you. And worse yet, without your computer, you don't have access to your iTunes music collection. So if you choose to erase your iPod, you should try to use a local computer (hotel, friend, Apple Store, etc.) with iTunes installed to either load some CDs you buy while on vacation or make friends with someone who will let you borrow some MP3s for the plane ride home.

  6. When all else fails, buy a book at the airport. Sorry. When you get home there are some more iPod Support articles that you might find helpful. And if your iPod has a bad hard drive, then try our iPod Repair Service to get it replaced. Good luck Tracy and we hope you didn't have to read anything past step 1.

If you plan on taking your iPod on vacation near water (beach, lake, boat, etc.), then make sure you get a waterproof case for your iPod.

Secret iPhone Diagnostic Codes

I lied. These codes are really that secret. A quick Google search will return thousands of results, but these codes aren't exactly advertised or listed in the manual.

Most cellphones use special "diagnostic codes" - numbers that can be dialed to display various technical information about the unit, the user's account, the cellular network it's "registered" on, or the local network that's currently available. You might have dialed a few of these already while on the phone with tech support.

This is a list of iPhone specific codes. But some of these may work your non-iPhone phone. Some are AT&T or North America specific. The only way to know if they work on your phone is to try.

Feel like dialing some secret iPhone codes? I thought so. Enjoy.

*3001#12345#* and tap Call. Enter Field Mode.

Field mode reveals many of the inner settings of your iPhone, specifically up-to-date network and cell information.

*#06# Displays your IMEI. No need to tap Call.
IMEI is the unique identifier for your cell phone hardware. Together with your SIM information it identifies you to the provider network. It's like a SSN for phones.

*777# and tap Call. Account balance for prepaid iPhone.

*225# and tap Call. Bill Balance. (Postpaid only)

*646# and tap Call. Check minutes. (Postpaid only)
These 3 above are pretty self explanatory.

*#21# and tap Call. Setting interrogation for call forwards.
Discover the settings for your call forwarding. You'll see whether you have voice, data, fax, sms, sync, async, packet access, and pad access call forwarding enabled or disabled.

*#30# and tap Call. Calling line presentation check.
This displays whether you have enabled or disabled the presentation of the calling line, presumably the number of the party placing the call.

*#76# and tap Call. Check whether the connected line presentation is enabled or not.
State whether the connected line presentation is enabled or disabled. Presumably similar to the calling line presentation.

*#43# and tap Call. Determine if call waiting is enabled.
Displays call waiting status for voice, data, fax, sms, sync data, async data, packet access and pad access. Each item is either enabled or disabled.

*#61# and tap Call. Check the number for unanswered calls.
Show the number for voice call forwarding when a call is unanswered. Also show the options for data, fax, sms, sync, async, packet access and pad access.

*#62# and tap Call. Check the number for call forwarding if no service is available.
Just like the previous, except for no-service rather than no-answer situations.

*#67# and tap Call. Check the number for call forwarding when the iPhone is busy.
And again, but for when the iPhone is busy.

*#33# and tap Call. Check for call control bars.
Check all the usual suspects (voice, data, fax, sms, etc) to see whether barring is enabled or disabled for outgoing.

Apple iPhone Platinum Edition

If you weren't the first guy on your block to bring home an iPhone, it looks like you'll get another shot to impress when the iPhone Platinum Edition becomes available next month. Goldstriker International, the fine folks who brought us the 24k gold iPod, will release the Power of Platinum collection in January. But you better act quick, because they are only making 250 of these bad boys.

As you can imagine there is quite a premium to own the world's first Platinum iPhone. Expect to pay about $2230 after the conversion from English Pounds. If the 250 units sell out as quickly as we think they will it's quite possible the phones will fetch a small fortune on eBay or at other auction sites. Keep your eyes on the Goldstriker website ( http://www.goldstriker.co.uk/aboutus.html ) early next month for your chance to buy the Platinum iPhone.

Goldstriker also offers a full line of professionally plated products ranging from laptop computers to keychains. You can also send Goldstriker your current iPod or iPhone and they will adorn the item in the precious metal of your choice. Turnaround is usually a super speedy 48 hours. We'll be interested to see what the always innovative Goldstriker comes up with next. For now we'll just keep on refreshing their website until we can buy the iPhone Platinum.

Onion Powered iPod

So it turns out a white onion is not only good for salsa, but good for charging iPods too. Here is a video showing you how to charge an iPod with an onion, Gatorade and USB cable.

I knew those electrolights are good for something. For those not interested in watching a 3 minute video here is the down-n-dirty:
  • put two holes on either side of your onion with screwdriver
  • soak the thing in Gatorade until most is gone (about 1 cup worth)
  • use the iPod USB cable and push in the USB connector into the onion.

Your iPod will turn on and charge shortly there. So for about 1 cup of Gatorade soaking into the onion will get you about 30 minutes of charge time.

Hacking YouTube Videos

UPDATE: YouTube has reworked their site again in response to this article. They absolutely hate us. If you get an error when trying to download a YouTube video, please try some of the plug-ins and scripts listed in step #3.

YouTube.com is a great resource. Not many sites allows users to freely upload, view, and share video clips like YouTube does. YouTube even lets users easily post videos on their blogs and personal web sites. But because anyone can upload a video clip on YouTube, copyright violations are rampant.

In an effort to prevent the widespread distribution of illegal copied video files, YouTube encodes its video files in the Adobe Flash format, which prevents viewers from downloading files and making digital copies.

Here's a step-by-step tutorial on how to rip video files off YouTube.com and convert them for Apple TV, iPod Video, iTunes and iPhone. This trick will work on Mac or PC using Firefox or Internet Explorer.

ReplayTV DVR Geared Towards iPhone and iPod Playback

ReplayTV is not the first to introduce a USB dongle for DVR use, however, they are the first to integrate a format easily playable on Apple hand-held devices like iPhone and iPod touch.

The Personal HD system bundles both digital ATSC and analog NTSC technology and play over-the-air HDTV signals or old school analog TV source. So now you TV junkies can overload on adictively pathetic reality TV shows (well, except Survivor).

replaytv iphone ipod
The real joy of the USB tuner is the software. The Personal HD specifically supports transfer of video to a format playable on widescreen hand-held devices made by Apple. Not to leave anyone out in the cold, the software can preserve multiple shows at once and even support USB devices from rival companies, such as ATI (AMD) and Pinnacle.

The ReplayTV goodie bag for the Personal HD system include direct encoding in a 4:3 ratio, intelligent keyword filter system to find shows by cast member names, show IDs or genre. Although the reply system isn't out just yet, it will be later this fall at the tune of $100.

iPod Nano Commercial with 1234 Song

If you were watching any of the American football games this past Sunday, then you probably saw the new 3rd generation iPod Nano commercial. The ad features the upbeat and catchy song "1234" by Canadian singer/songwriter Leslie Feist.

You can watch Feist's full video for "1234" here [link] on YouTube or check out her new album "The Reminder" on iTunes. The commercial is no doubt doing wonders for Leslie Feist's name recognition. Everyone is talking about it online (like me).

Here are the lyrics to "1234" used in the iPod Nano ad:
One Two Three Four
Tell me that you love me more
Sleepless long nights
That is what my youth was for

Old teenage hopes are alive at your door
Left you with nothing but they want some more

Oh, you're changing your heart
Oh, You know who you are

Apple Unveils Wi-Fi iPods

Apple unveiled its new line of iPods yesterday including a model with an iPhone-like touchscreen interface and Zune-like WiFi access. The "iPod Touch" sports a 3.5-inch widescreen and a Safari browser, creating a mobile YouTube delivery device that essentially replicates the iPhone browsing experience for non-AT&T subscribers. It's going to run $299 for an 8 GB model and $399 for a 16 GB version, scheduled to ship later this month. You can pre-order the new iPods from Apple.com.

The former Video iPod has been renamed the "iPod Classic" with a slimmer design and a bigger hard drive.

Although the new iPod Touch is very impressive with its Wi-Fi and touch-screen, the fact that it only has a 16GBs sucks big time. I like to keep my current iPod Video full of movies and TV shows that I ripped from DVD for my morning commute. The new smaller hard drive is a major sticking point for me. The reason the new iPods have smaller hard drives is because they are Flash memory based (no moving parts) and are able to withstand an occasional bump or drop better than traditional hard drives.

Apple is also teaming with Starbucks to allow customers to browse a new WiFi iTunes store for free inside of its coffee shops. Go near a Starbucks and an icon pops up. Click on it and you can buy Starbucks' current music selections.

Steve Jobs also announced he was phasing out the entry level iPhone and cutting the price of the upper-end model from $599 to $399.

Wi-Fi iPods Expected

Though it is not official, those in the "know" say Apple is just hours away from announcing a new Wi-Fi enabled iPod designed to receive digital radio along with an option to buy content from the iTunes Store. It is not known whether the same functions will be included in the iPhone.

Other rumors about the new Wi-Fi iPod line suggest the inclusion of a wide-screen touch-screen interface like the iPhone, larger storage capacity, Flash based hard drive and a new version of the iPod Nano that can handle video.

On a personal note, I'm ready for a wide-screen iPod. Watching wide-screen formatted movies that I've ripped off of DVD on the small iPod screen has been giving me a headache.

Since the iPod's release in 2001, the hand-held music player has gone from a fun toy to a cultural icon. But it may be time for a revamp. Last year Apple's iPod sales dipped for the first time since 2002.

iPod Crosswalk Ban

If U.S. State Sen. Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn) has his way, a new proposal would make it illegal to walk, jog or bike across the street in New York while using your iPod. Kruger wants to slap pedestrians with $100 fines for using electronic gadgets, like the iPod, while crossing the street. Last year, Australian Police issued a similar law that banned cyclists from using their iPods after a series of fatal accidents.

"This electronic gadgetry is reaching the point where it's becoming not only endemic but it's creating an atmosphere where we have a major public safety crisis at hand," said Kruger in a telephone interview with Reuters. Two men were killed in his Kruger's borough recently while listening to their iPods - one of which involved a 23-year-old who was killed in traffic while bystanders screamed "Watch out!" Unfortunately the man was unable to hear the warnings over the music in his headphones. Kruger has named this safety issue iPod Oblivion, but the bill goes beyond just iPods. The bill seeks to ban all popular electric devices such as cell phones, Sony PSPs, Blackberries, etc.

"If you're so involved in your electronic device that you can't see or hear a car coming, this is indicative of a larger problem that requires some sort of enforcement beyond the application of common sense," Kruger said.

Is an iPod crosswalk ban a little too Big Brother? Many people online aren't taking the news of this bill too seriously. Digg.com user packernirvana posted this tongue-in-cheek comment about the story: "I understand that they're working on another bill in New York. A $200 penalty for those caught walking and chewing gum."

Maybe everyone just needs to exercise a little common sense when using their iPod. How hard is it to lower the volume and look both ways before you cross the street? Didn't we all learn how to properly cross the street before we could tie our own shoelaces?

iTunes Problems with Vista

Thinking about upgrading to Microsoft's new operating system Vista? If you own an iPod, you might want to hold off on Vista... at least for now. Last week, Apple posted a warning on their website stating that customers using Windows Vista may experience compatibility issues with iTunes.

According to Apple, the latest version of iTunes (7.0.2) may work with Windows Vista on many typical PCs, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work and messes up your iPod in the process. Apple advices Windows users to wait and not install Vista until after the next release of iTunes. A new version of iTunes should be released sometime this or next month. If you've already upgraded to Vista and are having problems with iTunes, you might want to check out a utility called iTunes Repair Tool for Vista.

Apple has already identified several Vista compatibility issues with iTunes 7.0.2 and earlier. Here are some of the most common problems:
  • iTunes Store purchases may not play when upgrading to Windows Vista from Windows 2000 or XP

  • Cover Flow animation may be slower than expected

  • Contacts and calendars will not sync with iPod

  • iPod models with the “Enable Disk Use” option turned off may be unable to update or restore iPod software, and make changes to iPod settings

  • iPod models configured to Auto Sync and have the “Enable Disk Use” option turned off may require being ejected and reconnected to resync

  • Ejecting an iPod from the Windows System Tray using the “Safely Remove Hardware” feature may corrupt your iPod. To always safely eject an iPod, choose Eject iPod from the Controls menu within iTunes

If you really can't wait to install Vista, Apple suggests you consider the following precautions:
  • Users should deauthorize all iTunes Store accounts, enable Disk Use on all iPod models, uninstall iTunes and perform a clean install of Windows Vista (Highly recommended but not required).

  • They should then proceed to reinstall the latest version of iTunes, open iTunes and choose Authorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes.

  • A customer who has upgraded to Windows Vista and is still experiencing issues playing iTunes Store purchases should download the iTunes Repair Tool from Apple.com

Adam Anderson, a spokesperson for Microsoft's Windows division, said the company did not believe iTunes users "should stop using Vista for these reasons." He also said that Microsoft has a dedicated team working with Apple on getting iTunes running smoothly on Vista, and it will keep at it "until they have the program running to the quality level they're shooting for... We are also committed to ensuring that all partners, including Apple, receive all the resources they need to ensure that their applications work with Windows Vista," he said.

Apple has sold more than 90 million iPods since the product was first announced in October 2001.

iPod Diagnostic Mode

Even though you are probably not aware of it, virtually everything you own, which uses electricity, has a diagnostic mode. Everything from your cellphone to your dishwasher can tell you what is wrong with it, or at least give you a clue, if you know the secret combination of buttons to push. The iPod is no different.

If you suspect there is something wrong with your iPod, you can switch it to diagnostic mode to determine what the problem may be. The iPod's built-in diagnostic mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.

Copy Music from iPod to iTunes

Imagine that you have a HUGE media library and all of it is kept on your trusty PC or Mac. Now imagine that one day, your computer's hard drive crashes, and that your music library is now gone. All of the music imported off of CD's which you might have lost by now, all of the music downloaded off of free-music web sites, and most importantly, all that money spent on the iTunes Store has just vanished!

You then remember that all your music is still on your iPod, safe and intact. You plug it in, you mount it to the OS, and then you realize that iTunes only allows the downloading of music from iTunes to iPod, not iPod to iTunes. (This is to prevent the stealing of music, says Apple). Do you really want to spend hours re-importing music, and repurchasing music from the iTMS? We didn't think so.

Tutorial: Here's a detailed tutorial on how to copy music off your iPod and back onto your computer.

Zune vs Baseball Bat

On last Thursday's episode of Mad Money, host Jim Cramer selected Apple Computer as his #2 growth stock of 2007.

Cramer picked Apple Computer over Microsoft and decided to vent his rage against Microsoft by smashing a new brown Zune with a baseball bat. In case you missed it, the Zune smashing video is now on YouTube.

Although Apple's up more than 175% the last two years and more than 50% since July, Cramer believes Apple Computer will move higher because "picking stocks is not like flipping a coin." There's no balancing out that occurs, he said. Instead, "winners keep winning and "losers keep losing."

Cramer considers Apple a winner that has changed the way people listen to music with the iPod and the iTunes Store. "Not only is [Apple] a brand people trust and love, but it is cool... Microsoft's Zune MP3 player will not be able to push past Apple."

Cramer went on to say that there are always bears and short-sellers, but in Apple's case "they are wrong and should get buried... [Apple] has a winning formula, and nothing is going against it."

You can subscribe to the Mad Money "Lightning Round" video podcast in the iTunes Store here: Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer - The Lightning Round

Bill Gates Buys Blogger Buzz

Want some positive blogger buzz about your product or service? Maybe you should just buy it like Bill Gates. To help promote the Zune and get some positive Microsoft buzz, Gates coughed up a dozen round trip plane tickets to Redmond, hotel rooms, and Zunes (of course) for a group of gadget and tech bloggers. He then hung out with the bloggers for an hour and answered one question from each of them. Once you factor in the total cost of this stunt, I wonder how much Gates paid per letter for a handful of blog posts?

So what did Microsoft get in return for all of this? Were the bloggers wooed by Bill's big wallet? Yep.
  • Check out the tech-news search engine Techmeme.com. Today their homepage was practically a mural to anything related to Bill Gates, the Zune or Microsoft in general.

  • While most reviewers are panning the Zune, blogs like TechCrunch [see post], Micro Persuasion [see post], and GigaOm [see post], are restricting their Zune coverage to DRM issues or posting "feel good" pieces about Microsoft.

Honestly, my criticalness against these other blogs is probably part jealously. Why wasn't MethodShop.com invited out to Redmond? Oh well, I'm an iPod guy anyway and we're too small of a blog to make much of a dent for M$. But I do give some of these bloggers credit. Most of them (not Ryan) were upfront and disclosed that Gates gave them free Zunes and paid for their flights out to Microsoft headquarters.

But on the other hand, should corporate blogs like Micro Persuasion and GigaOm, who have venture-capital financing and/or big name PR firms, really be accepting free stuff and sacrificing their objectivity?

How cheap are your personal ethics?

Touchscreen iPod Rumors

If the latest round of touchscreen iPod rumors are true, you may want to revise your holiday wish list.

Rumors about an "iPod Touch" have been circulating around the Internet for awhile now. Even MethodShop.com posted some touchscreen iPod patent pictures back in February. The new twist to this story is that the touchscreen iPod might have a wide aspect ratio screen. This would make a lot of sense since Apple recently started selling movies on iTunes.

The new widescreen rumor originated from an anonymous executive at an iPod accessories company who spoke to someone at TrustedReviews. How reliable is this anonymous executive? Your guess is as good as ours. Anyway, here's what Mr. Anonymous had to say:
"In a very matter of fact tone I was told that the product was not designed for the current generation of device, but the official 6G iPod... which is to be released in December. His company's device only comes onto the market shortly before then and would benefit hugely because the new iPod would sport a screen that filled the full side of the device and consequently offer higher resolution video... This is why Jobs isn't afraid of the Zune,' he said, though he had no knowledge of whether wireless would make an appearance."
This might help explain Steve Jobs dismissive attitude last week:
"Jobs is unimpressed with Microsoft's Zune, which allows users to exchange songs. 'It takes forever,' said Jobs. 'By the time you've gone through all that, the girl's got up and left!'"
Adding more fuel to the fire, here's what Gizmodo had to say about the widescreen iPod rumors:
"One thing's for sure, if this widescreen iPod is released in the next two months, the Microsoft Zune with its old-fashioned 4x3 screen and crippled WiFi will be slam-dunked."

iPod Nano Commercials

Apple posted a downloadable QuickTime movie of the new iPod Nano ad on their website. You've probably already seen the ads on TV. If not, it's a slight departure from Apple's standard black silhouette dancer ads.

Although these ads still feature a silhouette dancer, their focus is more on the new colors of the iPod Nano and less about the dancer. It's a very clever way to both evolve their iPod creative campaign and emphasize the new product colors.

And what iPod ad would be complete without a terrific soundtrack? The song featured in this commercial is called The Audience is Listening by Cut Chemist.

Marketing is definitely one of Apple's strengths. Sony could really use some talent like that right now. The Sony PSP ads have to be some of the worst tech ads on television. The advertising company TBWA/Chiat/Day is the brainchild behind all of Apple's iPod ads. Now Apple just needs to take that same creative energy and channel it in to their laptop and desktop computers ad.

Here’s a simple tutorial on how to assign the drive letter ‘i’ to an iPod connected to a PC using Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000.

iPod DO NOT DISCONNECT Won't Go Away

Are you trying to eject your iPod from your computer but the "Do Not Disconnect" screen won't go away? Sometimes that flashing red icon can be pretty annoying - especially when you are in a hurry. However, the iPod's disconnect screen does serve a good purpose. It lets you know when it is safe to unplug your iPod from your computer's USB or FireWire port. Incorrectly disconnecting an iPod while it is in use can damage data on the iPod and/or the computer's hard disk.

But what should you do if the "Do Not Disconnect" message remains on your iPod even after you properly ejected it? Don't worry, this is a common problem with a fairly easy solution.

U2 iPod Gets Reincarnated

Does this black and red iPod look familiar? It should. It's the second coming of the U2 iPod.

The original iPod U2 Special Edition was announced on October 24, 2004 and was the first black iPod Apple ever produced. Apple discontinued it about a year later on October 12, 2005 and rabid U2 fans have been without a Rattle & Hum to satisfy their portable music needs ever since.

Operating under some Mysterious Ways, on 06.06.06, (the day of the devil???) Apple announced a reincarnation of iPod U2 Special Edition. The encore version is actually $20 cheaper than the original but has a bigger hard drive, color screen and is video ready.

Like the original U2 iPod, the new version comes with the autographs of each band member engraved on the back (black metal this time, not aluminum) and a coupon for U2 content from the iTunes Store. The exclusive content offering includes 30-minutes of music videos and band interviews.

Let's compare the original iPod U2 Special Edition with the new reincarnated version.

Price
- original: $349
- encore: $329

Color of metal backing
- original
- encore: black

iTunes Music Store Coupon
- original: $50 off the price of a digital U2 box set called The Complete U2
- encore: free 30-minutes of music videos and band interviews

Here are some technical details for the new iPod U2 Special Edition:

  • Holds up to 7,500 songs and album art

  • Holds up to 25,000 photos

  • Holds up to 75 hours of video

  • Accessory-compatible Dock connector

  • 2.5-inch (diagonal) color LCD with LED backlight

  • Comes with earbud headphones and USB cable

  • Autographs of all U2 members on the back

  • Bright 2.5-inch display with LED backlight

  • Up to 14 hours of battery life; up to 3 hours of slideshows with music; up to 2 hours of video playback

  • Works with Mac OS X or Windows 2000/XP

  • More info...

If you are a U2 fan who still hasn't found what you are looking for in a mp3 player, perhaps you should consider getting this newest member in the iPod family. The iPod U2 Special Edition is available from Amazon.com.

Unresponsive iPod

Do you have an iPod that is unresponsive? Occasionally an iPod may freeze or fail to respond to your commands. There are a few things you can do to troubleshoot this.

Here's an email from a MethodShop.com reader about an unresponsive iPod:

"I'm using a 40GB click-wheel iPod in Windows 2k. It is unable to fully boot up. When I turn it on, the Apple symbol comes up and the hard drive sounds like it begins to spin, and then it stops. Occasionally it gets to the folder w/exclamation point screen and then the hard drives stops and then starts again, going back to the apple screen. The iPod update application either doesn't detect the iPod or it freezes my whole computer. I have tried resetting, and since Windows/iPod update don't detect it, I can't restore either (even in disk mode). I have been unable to get the disk scan working." ~ dan

You most likely dropped your iPod or hit it pretty hard. This happened to a friend of mine (Bill) when he threw his backpack on the floor. His iPod was inside the backpack and the jolt from hitting the floor physically damaged the iPod's hard drive.

Unfortunately, if your hard drive is physically damaged, there's only one way to fix it - get it replaced. If your iPod is still under warranty or you purchased extended AppleCare for your iPod, then have Apple replace or repair your iPod. If your iPod is out of warranty, there are several third-party companies that can fix your iPod like these guys.

But before going through the hassle and cost of sending your iPod off to be repaired, try these free iPod troubleshooting tips first. Good luck!

What is Apple's Big Surprise? A Tablet?

Apple is announcing some "fun new products" today but what could they be? Howard Wolinsky from The Chicago Sun-Times asked his readers to send in their thoughts. Here's what they had to say:

Francois d'Anethan, dean of UBI, a business school in Brussels, Belgium, said, "The flip side of the iPod could be the face of a 'Mac' cell phone. That would be the ultimate piece of technology. Everybody I know who uses an iPod, would go for it without the slightest hesitation."

Daniel Schattnik, a lawyer in downstate East Alton, said, "If they paired an iPod with built-in XM or Sirius radio, I would buy it tomorrow." He said he would have no use for FM radio if he had satellite.

A half dozen iPod dreamers said they would like to see the MP3 player morph into a personal digital assistant to track appointments, list contacts, link to the Web and move images, music and files wirelessly. This would revive Apple's pioneering Newton PDA from a decade ago.

John Soles of Yorkville said Wi-Fi on an iPod PDA "opens up so many possibilities. It would be cool if two or more people in the same room . . . could share music so each could listen to the others' songs. The screen would be large enough to have a digital album with song lyrics and information similar to what is found in the jacket of CDs that one buys. Wi-Fi would be great for remote control and so many other things."

Vincent Verweij, chief executive of Makayama Interactive in Amsterdam, which developed iPod Media Studio software to copy DVDs for use on iPods, said iPods should have A/V inputs to capture video signals.

Although the Sun-Times readers tended to keep their speculation centered on the iPod, other people think Apple might announce an Apple touch sensitive tablet computer or a TiVo like Apple Media Center. You can read more about these announcement speculations here.

Touch Sensitive Apple Patent Pictures

Here's a few patent pictures Apple submitted to the US trademark website.

Is the touch sensitive iPod going to be a reality? You be the judge. After seeing these images, I must say it looks like an iPod to me. And with the increasing popularity of tablet PCs, a touch sensitive iPod would be something that would be very plausible.

However, it is still unclear if we are going to see an Apple tablet, full screen iPod or a combination of both. Nonetheless the multi point touch screen is a major revolution.

Check out the following video to see the possibilities:

Bad iPod Won't Sync

Is your iPod being bad? Is it having problems syncing or talking to iTunes? Let's try to troubleshoot this common problem.

Here's a letter from a MethodShop.com reader named Kate:

"my ipod froze the other day and i did the online steps to unfreeze it. It did unfreeze but now i have no songs. The songs are still on my computer itunes software but not on my actual ipod. Some thing is coming up each time i connect my ipod saying something about automatically updating my ipod each time i reconnect it. And i clicked 'yes' to this the first time i reconnected after the ipod froze. I cannot get all my songs to update back onto my ipod. What can i do to get them back on. ~kate.

Kate,

AutoSyncing the music from your computer back onto your iPod shouldn't be a problem. The fact that your iPod is freezing during this process means your iPod probably has an issue with its hard drive.

Hopefully your iPod's hard drive is just fragmented. An easy way to fix a number of issues with an iPod is to erase it.

Erase Your iPod
http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/

If erasing your iPod doesn't work, you unfortunately could have a bad hard drive. If your iPod is still under warranty, please contact Apple about getting it replaced. If your iPod is no longer covered under warranty, please contact the guys at iPodMods.com. They not only colorize and customize iPods, but they can also replace bad parts and make repairs.

Hopefully your iPod will be back from the dead in no time.

Duct Tape iPod Cover

Let's say you just blew all your money on an iPod and now you don't have any money left for a fancy case or one of those slick clear covers. What should do you do?

You could bum some money off a friend to buy one, but why not go DIY and make your own out of Duct Tape for free!

Here's how I made mine: Duct Tape iPod Cover

iPod Nano World Clock

If you managed to get your hands on an iPod Nano, you might have browsed through the menus and noticed some new features like a World Clock.

The World Clock is easy to use. Just set the clock and you can see the current time in multiple locations all at once. Seemingly trivial but surprisingly helpful for someone who does a lot of international business or traveling.

Our favorite little detail was how the clock faces turn black/white when it is night/day time in a particular city (see image on right). This makes it even easier to digest multiple world time zones with a single glance.

You can also set alarms in various time zones, set the clocks to change at Daylight Saving Time (or not, if you don't observe DST like Arizona residents) and sleep timers in different cities.

The World Clock is (currently) only available on the iPod Nano and Video iPod.

iPod Nano Commercial

UPDATE: You can see the September 2007 Apple iPod Nano ad set to the song "1234" by Leslie Feist here.

Apple has released a downloadable QuickTime movie of the iPod Nano ad on their website.

The iPod Nano commercial is a departure from Apple's black silhouette dancer ads. It features just a hand flipping around the tiny Nano with the grace of a seasoned Las Vegas card dealer.

And what iPod ad would be complete without a terrific soundtrack? The song featured in this commercial is called "Gimme That" by The Resource.

Our friends at iPodStudio.com had this reaction to the new iPod Nano commercial:
"Lots of hands and Nanos and amazingly, no silhouettes! Apple's been running a pretty intense ad campaign to make the world aware of the latest addition to the iPod line and seems to think it might have a winner on it's hands (pun?)... I'm guessing they're right... again."

iPod Toilet Trap

We've gotten a few of these "Help! I dropped my iPod in the toilet!" emails so far. It's almost an epidemic.

In fact, so many people have sent us emails about this toilet problem, we've created a special "iPod Toilet Trap" tech support page. If you have dropped your iPod in the toilet, this page might prove useful.

Podcasting Popularity Surge

The relatively new practice of 'podcasting' is taking hold in the US, according to a recent survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

Nearly a third of US adults who own iPods or other types of MP3 players have downloaded podcasts - audio broadcasts, such as radio shows, available on the web which can be downloaded to a computer and then transferred onto a portable audio device.

Young people are leading the way in the adoption of podcasting - a term which comes from combining the words 'iPod' and 'broadcasting'. Nearly half of the 18 to 28-year-olds surveyed who own MP3 players have listened to podcasts compared to 20 per cent of those over 29.

Yet the speed of one's internet connection appears to have little influence on the phenomenon. About 33 per cent of MP3 player owners with broadband have downloaded podcasts compared with 28 per cent of dial-up users.

The findings are based on a recent survey of 2,201 adults living in the US by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

iDockCover Review

Throw out all those cheap executive office stress toys on your desk and prepare to class up your workspace with a touch of woodcraft.

A company called Westshore Craftworks has taken some of the techniques used in classic guitar woodworking and refurnished it for the iPod with a product they call the iDockCover. This unique accessory is essentially a decorative wooden top for the standard iPod Dock.

The iDockCover has no electronic parts or wires. The sole purpose of the iDockCover is to make the standard white plastic iPod Dock less boring and give your desk a little more panache.

iPod Accessories Are Music to Fans' Ears

Say you had 60,000 compact discs of music and wanted all of it to be accessible every minute. How would you transport your tunes? If you were fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who heads Chanel and Fendi, you would design an iPod case to carry your 40 iPods on your trips around the world.

The Fendi Juke Box, an iPod carrying case for 12 iPods, is modeled after Lagerfeld’s own and costs $1,500 – iPods not included – according to iPodLounge.com.

“It’s the single most over-the-top iPod story I’ve heard,” said Jeremy Horvitz, 29, editor in chief of the Web resource site for iPods. “People still pamper their iPods in an almost surrealistic way.”

The iPod’s technology and sleek design have turned consumers into fanatics, some of whom buy multiple iPods and expensive accessories like the Christian Dior Vintage iPod case and the Louis Vuitton Damier iPod case, which cost almost as much as the iPod itself. Despite the accessories’ high costs, high-end retailers find that users will gladly pay. Coach, a designer leather goods brand, sold out of its $98 python-skin iPod case before the item was officially available in stories in September 2004, according to Jason Mendez, an associate manager of the Coach store in the Time Warner Center in Manhattan. A second release of Coach iPod cases, available in April of this year, has also sold out already.

No iPod For Bill Gates

On February 16th, Peter Jennings, the face of ABC News got to sit down with Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and talk about the future of the technology industry and what role Microsoft might have in it. Jennings didn't hold back and asked Gates about several sore subjects for his company including the success of FireFox, Google and the iPod.

Here's a portion of the transcript:

JENNINGS: On the subject of music, I read somewhere that about 80 percent of Microsoft employees who have a music playing instrument or a music playing device use an iPod.

GATES: Well, I doubt that's the case. Certainly, the iPod's a great success.

JENNINGS: Do you have one?

GATES: No, I'm not an iPod user. I use the Creative Zen which is a fantastic product. That's another space where, even what we have today, whether it's iPod or the other things are only the start of what we're gonna have in a few years. People are gonna want choices. These things are going to be smaller or better, cheaper. So, music has changed. The age of the CD is really coming to an end.

JENNINGS: The public likes this tension between you and the others as I'm sure you know. So people want to know do you have an iPod. You say you don't have. Did iPod beat you in this issue?

GATES: Oh the iPod did a great job, but what Apple's done there is typically what they do. It's their, only their one music store, only their device. What we're doing is providing choices. So it's like the Apple computer versus the PC. With the PC you can buy from many companies so you get cheaper prices, you get more variety and here with music devices we're coming in with the same. But they're a strong leader in the space and I think as we gain share, people will be surprised.

JENNINGS: But, it isn't hard for you is it to stand back and compliment somebody else?

GATES: No, particularly Steve Jobs who's done a lot of amazing things in our business.

JENNINGS: I've heard some people say that if they were graduating from science or technology today, they'd rather work for Jobs than Microsoft. Why do you think that might be true?

GATES: Well it's certainly not the case. You found a very unusual data point there. In terms of software that's going to change lives and the most interesting software work in the world we're able to attract the smartest people and believe me, that's something that we track very, very carefully. When it comes to having the best software people, that's been the key to our success.

iBod - iPod Sex Toy

"Many of the vibrators that are on the market today are intimidating for an unseasoned user." says Suki, OhMiBod’s creator.

"This is why when it came to designing OhMiBod the direction was to make it extremely approachable by keeping the design elegant and making it intuitive to use. I want OhMibod to be the first socially acceptable vibrator."

P. Diddy's Diamond Encrusted HP iPod

Coinciding with the release of Hewlett Packard’s iPod digital music player, rap star P. Diddy plans to attend his post MTV Video Music Awards party with his personalized Apple iPod encrusted with 120 diamonds.

HP is a major sponsor of the music awards, and all the guests at P. Diddy’s party, are to receive a gift of their own HP iPod... minus the diamonds.

Don't have the cash to blow on a diamond encrusted iPod? A much cheaper mod for your iPod would be to change the button and backlight colors with LED lights. Check this out.

iPod Toilet Trap

The iPod is barely a few years old and already we've gotten a bowl-load of these "Help!

For those of you who haven't dropped your iPod in the toilet yet, try not to take your iPod in the bathroom. If you really need to hear music, try singing the next time you are in the shower.
