Ziggy Marley iPhone App [review]

There's a new Ziggy Marley app for the iPhone in the iTunes Store. The app, called Ziggy Marley's Music Mixer, allows users to mix tracks, break beats and create their own dub sounds. There are also a couple features that take advantage of the iPhone's accelerometer feature. Just select one of these options in the app and shake your iPhone or iPod Touch to make instant randomized music.- "Jackpot Mix" - randomly mixes different sounds
- "DJ for Me" - picks a track and then randomly remixes interchangeable reggae riffs
You can download Ziggy Marley's Music Mixer app from the iTunes Store here.

Apple Acquires Music Streaming Service LaLa

Looks like Apple did a little Christmas shopping on their own. Over the weekend, news broke that Apple acquired the streaming music service and store Lala. We've been using Lala for awhile now and love it. Do you like to listen to music at work using iTunes? We got sick of trying to sync our music libraries at both home and work. Lala allows you to upload all your music and listen to it anywhere via a web browser. Let's hope Apple's plans on including this feature in a new version of iTunes.
However, in addition to being bale to upload your music to Lala, you can also purchase streaming "web" versions of songs with unlimited listening for $0.10. We didn't purchase many Lala's web songs, but users who did may get upset. According to TechCrunch, "it’s unlikely that the innovative deals negotiated by Lala will survive through the acquisition... If the deals with the music labels go up in smoke, Lala may lose the right to stream those songs. In other words, all the money users have been spending on web songs may go down the drain."
No one is exactly sure what Lala's future is with Apple. Let's hope Apple extends the streaming music deals already in place with Lala and integrates their engineering talent and technology with the end users in mind [GizmosForGeeks and TechCrunch].

Steve Jobs: New iPods, iTunes and Liver

Last week, a still kind of recovering Steve Jobs, equipped with a new liver, unveiled new iPods with increased multimedia functionality and a new version of iTunes. iTunes 9: New Features
- Smarter "Genius" Feature: The new and improved iTunes now makes "Genius" recommendations for not just music but apps, movies and TV shows too.
- Improved Syncing and File Transfers: iTunes 9.0 also improves syncing functionality and makes it easier to transfer downloaded media from iTunes to multiple computers.
- iTunes LP: Looks like the project "cocktail" rumors we heard in July we're true. Apple and the 4 major record labels, Sony, Warner Music, EMI and Universal Music, have gotten together to invent a new digital album cover format called iTunes LP. These "digital album covers" include extra media such as photos, lyrics, videos and additional songs not available to users who only purchase singles.
- iTunes Extras: Another feature called iTunes Extras gives iTunes users access to extra content for movie and TV purchases typically only included with DVDs. including documentaries, deleted scenes and interviews.
New iPods
- iPod Touch: 50 percent faster than the older models, smoother game play, cheaper prices, and larger storage. Ability to purchase pre-made ringtones.
- iPod Classic: more storage.
- iPod Shuffle: more storage, available in new colors: black, silver, blue, green, pink and a special edition in polished stainless steel.
- iPod Nano: new colors, a larger screen, FM radio, and a built-in video camera.

JVC HA-NC250 Noise Canceling Headphones

After a recent 4-hour flight with 3 different types of earbuds jammed in, wrapped around and loosely falling out every time I shifted in my seat, it was time to invest in a good pair of nose canceling headphones.I dropped $125 on a traditional pair of headphones 2 years ago and it was a big mistake. Lacking the portability and performance I wanted the head band finally broke a few weeks ago while I was struggling to get them wrapped up going through airport security. If you travel quite a bit, commute on the subway or train, and want the best sound quality to complement your iPod or iPhone it makes sense to spend a little extra and get a more complete package.
After researching several different brands and models I chose the JVC HA-NC250 for their style, performance, comfort, portability and value. According to CNET, "[they] make a great travel companion for those who demand quality sound. And they may not be cheap, but they seem that way next to the Bose QuietComfort 3."

United Airlines Breaks Guitars [video]

In the spring of 2008, musician Dave Carroll and other passengers watched from the plane as clutzy United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago broke his $3500 Taylor acoustic guitar on the tarmac.
After the incident, Carroll contacted the airline to ask for compensation. For the next few months, Carroll was given the runaround until United Airlines finally said they wouldn't pay for the damages. Before hanging up the phone for the last time with United Airlines, Carroll made a promise.
"I promised the last person [from United Airlines] to finally say no to compensation, Ms. Irlweg, that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world," Carroll said on his website.
It's been almost a year since Carroll's Taylor guitar was smashed on the tarmac, but he's finally making good on his promise. This week, Carroll uploaded a song he recorded with his band Sons of Maxwell to YouTube. It's called "United Breaks Guitars."
Here are a few lyrics from the chorus:
United, United
You broke my Taylor guitar
United, United
Some big help you are
You broke it, you should fix it
You're liable just admit it
I should have flown with someone else or gone by car
'Cause United breaks guitars
Unfortunately for United Airlines, the music video and the story behind it has caught the attention of the Internets. "United Breaks Guitars" is currently the top link on Reddit.com and Carroll's song has prompted an onslaught of negative comments about United Airlines across the Internet from Twitter to YouTube. Our favorite so far is "Revenge is a dish best served with country accompaniment."
Doesn't United Airlines know that the customer is always right? The amount of money and time United Airlines will have to spend dealing with this PR nightmare will far exceed $3500.

Amazing Feet Guitar Player [video]
Here's your inspiration for today. Tony Melendez was born in Nicaragua without any arms. At age 16, he started to learn the guitar. People told him it couldn't be done. As you can see from this YouTube video, not only can Tony strum the guitar, he can play chords with his toes and even sing.
On September 15, 1987, he played "Never Be The Same" for Pope John Paul II. The Pope called him a "gift of hope."

Faith No More Reunion Tour
Are you Cucko for Caca and Digging the Grave in an Epic the Land of Sunshine? If so, then you'll probably remember a popular alternative metal band called Faith No More that broke up in 1998.Last February, FNM announced that they'd be reforming for a reunion tour... but most fans were skeptical. The band didn't exactly part on happy terms. Then it happened. Faith No More played their first show in 15 years on June 10th and they didn't kill each other.
In fact, Faith No More are now headlining music festivals all over Europe this summer. Even record executives are getting excited. To coincide with the band's reunion tour, last week Rhino released a Faith No More compilation, The Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collection, a double album that includes their hit singles and b sides & rarities.
The line up for the reunion tour remains unchanged from their last released album, Album of the Year (1998). Mike Patton is back on vocals and Jon Hudson on guitar. Hardcore FNM fans will notice the absence of Jim Martin, Courtney Love and Chuck Mosley.
- Mike Patton - lead vocals
- Billy Gould - bass guitar
- Mike Bordin - drums
- Roddy Bottum - keyboards
- Jon Hudson - guitar
Faith No More hasn't been active the last 15 years, but you've probably been exposed their music. Do you recognize or remember any of the following?
- "We Care a Lot" is the theme song for the Discovery Channel show Dirty Jobs.
- "Easy" was used in a commercial for Levi's in 2006.
- "Midlife Crisis" was used in the video games Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Tony Hawk's Underground 2
- "From out of Nowhere" was featured in EA Sports' Madden NFL 2005 and NHL 2005.
- "Epic" is featured in a trailer for Street Fighter IV, on the Burnout Paradise soundtrack, and is a playable track in Rock Band
- "We Care a Lot" is also available on Rock Band via download
- "We Care a Lot" was also included on the sound track to the 1997 John Cusack film Grosse Pointe Blank.
- "Falling to Pieces" was featured in Ridley Scott's 2001 war movie Black Hawk Down, as background music while soldiers prepare for their mission.
Here's some more random Faith No More trivia:
FNM's breakthrough 1989 album, The Real Thing, reached the top ten on the charts thanks largely to MTV's heavy rotation of the "Epic" music video. The controversial music video featured footage of a fish out of water that died. The fish was later revealed to be Björk's and controversy around the fish further helped increase the band's name recognition.
Faith No More was best known for their influential and creative combination of elements associated with multiple music genres including heavy metal, funk, progressive rock, hip hop, punk and jazz.
After the band broke up in 1998, the members disbanded and went off to do solo and side projects. Since 1998, Mike Patton has written, sang or produced albums with Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Lovage, Fantômas, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Peeping Tom, John Zorn, The Melvins, Melt-Banana, Kool Keith, Hemophiliac, Maldoror, Painkiller, Naked City General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Björk. He's also released two solo albums Adult Themes for Voice (1996) and Pranzo Oltranzista (1997).

If you go to Napster.com, you might recognize the same old Napster logo from the Shawn Fanning days (Napster's founder circa 1999), but now there's a tiny Best Buy tag in the bottom of the homepage. The new version of Napster now has a $5 monthly subscription plan (when Roxio owned Napster it used to be $15). So what do you get for your $5 a month?

BriTunes - Brian Williams Interviews Deer Tick for New Online Music Show

Wow. Who knew NBC Nightly News anchor, Brian Williams, was so hip? On Monday, the American newscaster launched a new web-only video interview series focusing on independent music and musicians called "BriTunes."
The debuted episode of BriTunes is an interview with a band called Deer Tick from Brooklyn, NY. If you aren't already familiar with Deer Tick, their name might sound familiar. Rolling Stone called Deer Tick the No. 1 breaking band at SXSW 2009. Williams invited all four members of Deer Tick, John J. McCauley III, Christopher Dale Ryan, Dennis Ryan and Andrew Tobiassen, to a conference room at NBC's 30 Rockefeller Plaza headquarters for the interview.
According to this quote from the BriTunes homepage, Williams wants to keep the focus of BriTunes on independent musicians and up-and-coming artists.
"Okay, so I didn't name this thing, but I did come up with the idea. I have always loved identifying good music and good groups -- discovering them early (bar bands are best) and following them through their journey. While we'll interview some established musicians, mostly I'd like this to be a place where people can sample some of the great music being created every day, by talented musicians who wouldn't dream of doing anything else." --Brian Williams

Apple Ends Uniform iTunes Pricing

Used to paying $0.99 for a song on iTunes? Brace yourself... Apple put an end to uniform pricing in the iTunes Store this week. But don't worry, the change in price could be in your favor. Apple now offers 3 pricing tiers for music sold in the iTunes Store ($0.69, $0.99, $1.29). The change in pricing is in response to music labels demanding to charge more money for their popular songs.
So how did the competition react? Amazon, Rhapsody and Wal-Mart all raised the prices of their most popular downloads. So much for shopping around for the best deal. It almost makes you want to fire up BitTorrent and get your tracks for free.

Apogee Duet - Review
We all know one of the weak spots of Apple computers is the audio output jack. This 1/8" stereo mini-plug is where we connect our speakers and/or headphones to listen back to programs ranging from iTunes and Safari to Garageband and Logic. While the Mac audio output jack does double as an optical output (where you would need an optical cable), the majority of users connect in a typical 'analog' fashion.
But what if you could find a relatively inexpensive interface that could easily convert that analog signal to a higher quality digital output for all your apps? Well, the sleek, portable aluminum-cased Apogee Duet may just be the answer.

Wal-Mart Music Store Kills DRM
Did you purchase any music online from Wal-Mart?Following in the footsteps of Yahoo a few months ago, and in the spirit of Steve Jobs' "open letter" last February, Wal-Mart announced that on October 9, 2008 it will stop supporting tracks sold with DRM (Digital Rights Management). After that, users will be unable to transfer or listen to digital Wal-Mart music on a new computer.
The good news is that Wal-Mart's new DRM free mp3 music downloads will be iPod and iPhone compatible.
The record companies had originally forced DRM onto all online music retailers in an effort to curb piracy via file sharing services like Hotline, BitTorrent and LimeWire. But with the speed and frequency that consumers purchase new computers and mp3 players like the iPod, DRM restrictions by online music retailers like Yahoo, iTunes and Wal-Mart gave users even more of a reason to seek DRM free pirated music. In the long run, DRM helped promote digital music piracy and not prevent it.

Wal-Mart didn't have very many online music customers (especially compared to iTunes), but if this affects you, hurry up and burn the tracks to a CD then rip them back to non-DRM MP3 tracks. October 9th is only a couple weeks away and you don't want to lose that John Tesh box set you secretly bought online from Wal-Mart... or maybe you should?

Jane's Addiction Reunion Rumors
Eric Avery is one of the unsung heroes of the alternative rock movement in the late 80s and early 90s. As one of the 2 founders of Jane's Addiction, Avery along with Perry Ferrell helped define the So-Cal sound that paved the way for bands like Sublime and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.Unfortunately Jane's Addiction only lasted through 2 studio albums (Nothing's Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual) and broke up in 1991. But a recent blog post by Eric Avery, hints at a the possibility of a full reunion with the original lineup.
Here's the quote from Avery's blog:
"how do i mention speculating without creating, at the very least, some wild speculation over the coming months. am i considering something with the boys of janes addiction? yes."
Why the sudden change of heart? Jane's Addiction has reformed twice since 1991 without Avery. Last April, the original Jane's Addiction lineup (Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins) reunited to perform at the NME Awards. Apparently all went well both on stage and off. This was the 1st performance with Avery since their 1991 Lollapalooza tour.
Since Jane's Addiction's original breakup in 1991, Avery has been courted by Tool, Metallica, and Smashing Pumpkins, has toured with Garbage and Alanis Morissette (who he also dated) and participated in 2 side projects, Polar Bear and Deconstruction. Avery has given his blessing to put some free mp3s from his Polar Bear project online. The downloads include the out-of-print albums Chewing Gum and Man's Ruin and some a live unreleased tracks including the song "Green." Also Avery's self-produced album titled "Help Wanted" on Dangerbird Records was released in April 2008. If you've been curious about what he's been up to since Jane's Addiction, definitely check out his new CD and the free mp3s.Hopefully everyone has put aside the issues that led to their breakup in 1991 and fans will finally see a new Jane's Addiction album come out soon.
